Hi Gang. Why not get out of the comics ghetto and send in some of your stuff?
====================================================================

NEW CATEGORIES IN DIY BOOK FEST!

7/24/2002
The 2002 DIY Book Festival will honor the top comic book, 'zine, and fan fiction as part of its overall awards ceremony on Nov. 2, 2002 in New York City.

The annual program will be held at the New York Hilton Hotel as part of the DIY Convention: Do It Yourself in Film, Music & Books and the 22nd annual CMJ Music Marathon.

Celebrating the success of the independent authors and publishers of the world, The DIY Book Festival will consider self-published or independent publisher non-fiction, fiction, children's books, how-to, e-books, 'zines, fan fiction and comic books released after Jan. 1, 2000.

All entries must be in English and have been self-published or issued by an independent house that has published less than 75 works since the entry cut-off point.

Grand Prize for the DIYBF Author of the Year is a flight to New York, hotel accommodations, plus $1000 cash (or, if a New York resident, a trip to the Los Angeles DIY Convention in 2003 with similar accommodations and cash).

Other prizes include $500 cash to genre category winners and software from Palm Digital Media, makers of e-book software, and Final Draft, makers of leading screenplay software, plus a library of books from leading independent publisher Soft Skull Press.

Submitted works will be judged by a panel of industry experts using the following criteria:

1) General excellence and the author's passion for telling a good story;

and

2) The unique use of DIY resources to create a compelling book experience.

ENTRIES:

Please classify your book and enter it in the following categories. Multiple entries must be accompanied by a separate fee for each book.

1) Non-fiction

2) Fiction

3) Children's books

4) How-to

5) E-books (word or .pdf file acceptable)

6) Comic books/'zines

In addition to honoring the top selections in the above categories, The DIY Book Festival will award the following chosen from submissions:

1) DIY Author of the Year -- Honors the outstanding book in fiction and non-fiction

2) DIY Book Design of the Year --- Honors outstanding and innovative design

3) DIY Independent Publisher of the Year -- Honors the outstanding publisher based on general innovation in editorial, marketing and promotion during the selection period.

4) Outstanding Fan Fiction -- Awarded to the online author of the best new fictional work based on existing characters in film, tv, books or other popular entertainment (word or .pdf file acceptable)

FESTIVAL RULES:

DIY Book Festival submissions cannot be returned. You must submit the official entry form, including providing your e-mail address and contact telephone number, with each entry. All shipping and handling costs must be borne by entrants. Prizes will be awarded to the person entering the contest unless otherwise designated prior to the contest deadline.

NOTIFICATION AND DEADLINES:

We will notify each entry of the receipt of their package via e-mail and will announce the winning entries on our web site (www.diybookfestival.com) on Oct. 25th. Because of the anticipated high volume of entries, we can only respond to e-mail inquiries.

Deadline for submission in each category is Oct. 1, 2002. Winners in each category will be notified by Oct. 15, 2002.

TO ENTER:

Entry forms are available online at www.diybookfestival.com. Applications must be accompanied by a non-refundable entry fee via check, money order or PayPal online payment of $50 in U.S. dollars for each submission. Multiple submissions are permitted but each entry must be accompanied by a separate form and entry fee.

AWARDS:

Winners of the 2002 DIY Book Festival will be honored at a gala ceremony held Sat. Nov. 2nd in New York City at the New York Hilton Hotel during the DIY Convention: Do It Yourself in Film, Music & Books, held during the CMJ Music Marathon. You do not need to be present to accept your award or accompanying prizes. DIY Book Festival winners in each category and their approved guests will be admitted free to the entire DIY Convention.

Entry forms are available online at www.DIYBookFestival.com. Applications must be accompanied by a non-refundable fee of $50 in U.S. dollars, payable online at www.DIYBookFestival.com via PayPal or by mailing a check or money order to the address below. Apparently Kirrily Schell's 'Cheese Party' went well, complete with Tim Danko wearing a homemade cheese tie. Like Aaron O' Donnell's meat shirt, the new trend for comics cognoscenti seems to be edible clothing.
