Okay, okay,

I've been fairly slack with writing about comics because I've been pretty busy drawing them!
I hope none of you will fault me.

Met up with Toby Morris (some sample art below) at Hurley's Cantina a little over a week ago.

He and his inamorata are taking a leisurely jaunt through Southeast Asia. I hastily scribbled notes for Siem Reap and Battambang doings.

Great to get copies of his minis: anthology of comic strips Smoke VS Water (from various street press publications) and Sunken, a more personal meditation.

Every cyclo driver wants to step up to a moto, and every moto driver aspires to own a tuk-tuk. After that? I guess you graduate to a perhaps being a tourist guide, or have another job you've built up skills for.

However, many cyclo and moto drivers are not Phnom Penhois, but migrant workers from the countryside. And literacy rates vary. So keep your map handy. Unlike other cities, you can't simply say 'Street 184' and sit back.

New Year, Part One

Yes, I know New Years Resolutions are kind of hokey.
I don't care. In Cambodia we have three New Year celebrations to get it right. (International, Chinese, and Khmer!)

So:

1. Reconcile my bankbook, my computer files with my paper files, and with my friends that I've been out of touch with.

2. Spend more time at the drawing board and post office than at the keyboard surfing the internet. http://comicsrehab.wordpress.com

3. Umm.... try to reboot my own site, and get Comics Lifestyle to be more international. (Below, signups on our MySpace outpost.)

4. Make millions of dollars selling comics and retire to my own island of the coast of Dubai.

I stumbled out of bed today, unshaven, in search of noodles. On the way hit the newsstand. Then did a double-take.

Doraemon's in Cambodia.

Doraemon's in Khmer. At 25 cents a pop. (1000 riel).

For those unfamilar with the character, Doraemon is the embodiment of fun and adventure, star of manga and anime alike. With a 4th-dimensional wormhole pocket, he has no end of resources for his schoolboy pal Nobita. Kind of a neutered Hanuman, if you will.

I bought four copies. One to read, one to give to Khmer friends to check the nuances, one for the archives, one for the Japanese Embassy. Because it didn't have a copyright.

I also bought a few of the 1000 riel books that have a distinctly shojo look to them.
It's definitely time to wake up and smell the cat food.

Dropping chili paste and lime into my noodles, watching the ice sublimate off my coffee, I can see that the cheap joke books have slowly created a new market for cheap comics. Modern, well designed comics, not the 500 riel comics that are reprinted from 20 years ago.

Unfortunately, if Cambodia goes the same route as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, it will be flooded with manga. Because it's much cheaper to translate than to create original material. And there's a field tested, proven back-catalogue. All ready for bootlegging.

I have great affection for manga and great distaste for intellectual property theft. Not only are the Doraemon bootleggers stealing from Shogakukan and mangaka, they're taking potential shelf space from local creators.

Cambodia's comics scene began in the 1960s with a largely French influence. I feel a little weird, as if the tectonic plates have shifted just a little bit to the East, and I'm the only witness. A tiny event, but with tremendous repercussions for local art and literacy.

While in Siem Reap, I got word that I had some mail sent to an old mail address.
(I've actually found mail here in 'SR' a lot more reliable than Phnom Penh.)

Lo and behold, a care package from Mandy Ord (above left) with some goodies, most notably the latest issue of Going Down Swinging, complete with a comic section featuring my favorite artists & assembled by our Ord!

Awww. I'm happy and homesick at the same time. There is some great stuff in this issue and the impact is naturally a bit more intense when you know the creators.

Off to a wedding. Life is schweet.

Since January, I've been attempting to do a weekly comics page in Khmer, based on the 'Illustration Friday' topics.

Some weeks I put up a 'bookmark' spot illustration to get in the queue, which is replaced by a page later.

I was pretty strict about the deadlines until I moved offices in July. Then deadlines started getting missed. And I had a pretty big backlog of full pages.

Meanwhile, our Khmer Comics nonprofit, 'Our Books', is taking off. We were just interviewed for a podcast and I'll provide a link for that when it's up. So while my comics go into the slow lane, I'm happy to work strengthening the Khmer comics world. Next week? Lire en Fete Book Festival at the French Cultural Centre.

What I do have left is a great list of topics to develop. So I've decided I'm going to work the rest of the year on the prior topics, and continue to do spot illos on Friday.

Come January? Maybe I'll seek some resources to give it another shot. Possibly in coordination with some local comic artists to boot. Why should I have all the fun?

I nearly poohed my pants laughing when I saw this one from John Allison.
Help. I'm hooked on soap operas. But they're comic soap operas. I shouldn't be reading them, but I do anyway.

To their credit, they *produce* a color strip on a daily basis. Can any of us claim the same?

This Illustration Friday comic was pretty simple. Everyone has regrets. It's a little tricky to visualise them though.

I wrote the text at 7am, and finished at 11:30 on May 22.

I enjoy drawing and reading comics, but they don't make me a living. They always seem to be 'in the margins' of my paying work.

Usually I can draw a page in under an hour, but the translation added a little bit of complication.
My written Khmer is pretty lame, and now it's here for all the world to see! I may edit this a bit later.

Cambodian comic artists got their day in the (Mediterranean) sun, as part of exhibition BD � BASTIA.: March 30, 31, April 1 and 2.

Samples from S�ra's 2005 workshop were exhibited as a part of the event. (Participants were Tek Tevin, Nhek Sophaleap, Lim Santepheap, Moeu Diyadaravuth, Phal Phouriseth, Chan Nawath, Sovana Sim, Touch Rethy, Kim Samath, and Sang Sok Chamrong.)

A genuine guide of Cambodia ultimately, at the same time poetic and very realistic, where nothing seems to escape from the glance sharp-edged from Simon Hureau: fauna, flora, the beauty of the temples, but also, the misery and distress of people still traumatized by the wounds of the Khmer Rouge genocide. Admittedly, the graphic style of this young author born in Caen in 1977 and graduate of the Higher School of Arts-d�co of Strasbourg will be able d�sar�onner holding them of a comic strip "traditional" directly inspired by the school of the "clear line", Palaces is essential nevertheless like excellent "a precipitate" of Cambodia of today at the same time tender, tragic and full with humour.
