Women in East Timor have particularly suffered due to Indonesian attempts at 'Ethnic Cleansing'. As in Bosnia, rape has been used as a strategy to separate women from their families and society, as well as to create a new generation with divided loyalties.   East Timor's traditional society is not as open or as forgiving about sexual issues, and this has been used against them. Regardless, many brave women have managed to speak out about sexual assault and programs of forced sterilization.
