Calling your local representative makes sense given the degree of urgency. Telegrams and emails are good too. And in the estimation of government bureaucrats, snailmail still trumps email. So don't forget to also print out that letter, stamp it and post it,  it’ll make an even greater impact.
     What to say?

• Urge your governmental representatives to call your head of state directly about the humanitarian crisis in East Timor and the urgent need for more air drops, open access to aid/relief organizations, especially in West Timor and other islands of Indonesia, and long-term aid/development projects. Mention the food aid stockpiled in Darwin.  Urge them to cancel all military aid and loans to the Indonesian government and to freeze its accounts.

• If you’re in the USA, urge your senators to cosponsor House Resolution 2809 and S. 1568. HR 2809 in particular needs more congressional support. Also urge representatives to cosponsor HR 1063, which closes loopholes that have enabled the Pentagon to continue training militaries with records of gross human rights violations (in spite of congressional intent to halt such training).
